Vernon Lake Narrows Bridge, Huntsville, Ontario
Pre-assembled SRU brackets save time on the bridge project
As part of the Ontario Government’s plan for safe and reliable roads, the decision was made to replace the southbound Vernon Lake Narrows Bridge on Highway 11 in Huntsville.
The $19-million construction contract was awarded to Aecon Construction and Materials Limited of Toronto in 2008 and is expected to be complete by fall 2010.Under the contract, Aecon had to remove the existing southbound bridge structure on Highway 11 and build a new southbound bridge in its place.
The project involves a unique construction challenge in an environmentally sensitive lake, and will be completed using predominantly marine capabilities.
Marine barges have been used to remove the existing eight piers in Lake Vernon, and to build four piers for the new 235 m long and 14 m wide, five
span bridge structure. Aecon’s marine capabilities have ensured that the project is completed with the utmost respect for the surrounding environment.
For the bridge deck concrete formwork operation, PERI supplied 400 SRU composite brackets, which is a VARIOKIT standard component. To save time at the jobsite, the brackets were preassembled in the PERI assembly shop and shipped complete to the site. PERI also provided technical information and blueprints for the formwork operation of the project including operating instructions and assembly drawings. The modular VARIOKIT system has been developed by PERI to provide an ideal formwork solution for Civil Engineering structures such as tunnels and bridges.
