Cold Storage Facility, Balzac, Alberta
Crane-less wall formwork construction made possible using DOMINO system
The $115 million 37,160 m2 grocery distribution centre in Balzac, Alberta, north of Calgary is one of the largest refrigerated buildings in Canada. When it is fully operational in late 2010, the centre will be a hub for distribution of fresh food in Western Canada.
The DOMINO modular aluminum and steel panel formwork system was used to form the 1,100 m long walls, with height varying between 1.20 m to 2.40 m.
The lightweight of DOMINO panels allowed forming operation to be carried out without use of a crane. The 250x100 aluminum panel weighs only 57 kg. The flexibility of DOMINO allows for changes in width and height of walls and accommodates inserts required for 96 truck docking stations.

“We chose DOMINO because of crane restrictions and tight schedule of project. DOMINO’s flexibility together with its broad range of accessories and the innovative alignment couplers, enabled us to implement
height alignments needed in the project.”
